At Atom Computing, we build quantum computers using arrays of optically trapped neutral atoms that will empower customers to achieve unprecedented computational breakthroughs. Join a world-class team of scientists, engineers, and business professionals to advance the state-of-the-art in quantum computing.
Atom Computing is seeking a Principal Computer Systems Researcher to define and evolve the hardware and controls architecture for our next-generation quantum computing systems. In this role, you will align Atom’s internal technology roadmap with commercial trends, applying systems engineering methodologies to identify and manage risks. You’ll design scalable control architectures capable of supporting utility-scale quantum computers, making critical design trade-offs between software, FPGA, and custom ASIC solutions. The ideal candidate understands quantum control flow and access patterns and can translate that insight into performant hardware designs. The designs will be presented within Atom Computing and to external stakeholders. You will play a hands-on role in implementing and overseeing these systems to advance Atom’s product roadmap and push the boundaries of quantum computing performance and scalability.
Due to the need for collaboration with Atom’s theory, software and hardware teams, this role is required to be in the office in Boulder, Austin or Berkeley at least 3 days per week.

Job Responsibilities

  • Work with colleagues to further the hardware and firmware roadmap at Atom Computing.
  • Document the product roadmap and present as appropriate to external stakeholders.
  • Implement software or firmware as required to de-risk the proposed technical roadmap.
  • Work closely with Atom Computing’s quantum physicists, optical engineers, and hardware engineers to understand use cases and deliver infrastructure, cyber-security and developer experiences that addresses the needs.

Experience & Education

  • PhD in Computer Science, Electrical Engineering, or related field.
  • 7+ years of post-degree experience building complex systems.

Qualifications

  • Proficiency in software development using C++, Python, Rust, or Go, and experience with FPGA design in VHDL or Verilog. An ability to apply these skills in rapid prototyping.
  • Proven ability to design and build complex computer systems that advance beyond the current state of the art.
  • Knowledge in one or more of the following areas: computer architecture, signal processing, algorithm development, quantum error correction, distributed systems, or compilers, with a willingness to learn across disciplines as needed.
  • Strong communication skills, demonstrated through technical presentations, publications, or collaborative research.
  • Adaptability and curiosity, with a demonstrated ability to learn new technologies and work effectively in areas of uncertainty.
Atom Computing provides a wide variety of perks and benefits, including fully paid medical, dental, and vision insurance for our employees and their dependents. Additionally, unlimited paid time off, 401K company matching, short- and long-term disability, FSA, dependent care benefits, and life insurance.
