Our passion is designing and building powerful 3D printing tools. Our manufacturing team is responsible for research and development of the manufacturing processes for all of Formlabs products. They work cross functionally with mechanical design, electrical, and materials teams.

If you’re excited to help us troubleshoot processes, ramp manufacturing, and launch products, we want you as a Mechanical Process Engineer.

The Job: Responsibilities include, but are not limited to, the following:

  • Mechanical Systems Monitoring and Troubleshooting:
    • Analyze and troubleshoot mechanical systems related to material handling, mixing, blending, and packaging.
    • Monitor equipment performance (pumps, mixers, conveyors, etc.) and identify areas for improvement.
  • Mechanical Design Support: Create or review mechanical drawings, P&IDs, and 3D models (using tools like SolidWorks, AutoCAD, or Inventor) for equipment modifications and new installations.
  • Equipment and Process Optimization:
  • Recommend and implement improvements or redesigns for mechanical equipment and material handling processes to meet safety, quality, production, and cost goals.
  • Focus on optimizing fluid flow, mixing efficiency, and material transfer.
  • Interdepartmental Collaboration:
    • Effectively interact with R&D, production, and maintenance teams to ensure seamless process operations.
    • Collaborate on equipment specifications and installation plans.
  • Equipment Installation and Modification:
    • Prepare work areas and coordinate with the maintenance team for process improvement and equipment installation.
    • Develop and evaluate alternatives and cost estimates for new equipment installations and modifications.
    • Help with the mechanical design and implementation of new equipment.
  • Continuous Improvement:
    • Contribute to a culture of continuous improvement by identifying and implementing process enhancements.
    • Focus on improving equipment uptime, capacity, and cost performance.
  • Preventive Maintenance Planning: Support the development or refinement of preventive maintenance schedules and predictive maintenance strategies.
  • Material Handling and Mixing Scale-Up:
    • Lead the mechanical aspects of scaling up mixing and blending processes for new 3D printing material formulations.
    • Evaluate and select appropriate mechanical equipment for new material processes.
  • Equipment Selection and Evaluation:
    • Assist in the investigation and selection of mechanical equipment for new 3D printing material processes, considering factors like material viscosity, flow rates, and mixing requirements.
  • Effective Communication:
    • Maintain clear and effective communication at all levels of the organization.
  • Perform other duties as assigned by the supervisor.

You:

  • Must have a BS in Mechanical Engineering.
  • Strong understanding of mechanical systems, fluid mechanics, and material handling.
  • Ability to work independently and collaboratively with the maintenance team.
  • Safety-conscious and committed to promoting safe work practices.

Bonus Points:

  • 2-3 years of experience in a chemical processing or manufacturing environment.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite and 2D/3D CAD programs (e.g., SolidWorks, AutoCAD).
  • Familiarity with OSHA regulations and safe practices related to industrial equipment and material handling.
  • Experience with fluid handling systems, mixing equipment, and material transfer processes.
  • Exposure/experience with automation, packaging lines, and plant engineering duties.
  • Experience with polymer processing equipment.
  • Experience with powder handling.
