About Slack
Slack is your Digital HQ — bringing people, apps, customers, and AI agents together in one place. Millions of people use Slack every day to communicate, collaborate, and get work done. As work becomes increasingly distributed and AI-powered, Slack is redefining how teams operate and how work happens at scale.
The Team
The Slack Mobile team builds Slack's mobile experiences, from core messaging to AI and everything in between.
We operate at the intersection of product innovation, mobile platform excellence, and large-scale engineering. The features and systems we build support millions of daily users and require deep investments in performance, reliability, accessibility, and user experience.
The Role
We're looking for a Senior Staff Android Engineer (Architect) to help define the future of Slack on mobile. As a Senior Staff Engineer, you'll serve as a top technical authority spanning multiple teams and orgs. You'll set strategy at an organizational scale, shape product and technical direction across Slack's mobile platform, and lead innovation on the biggest opportunities facing Slack's Android application.
You'll partner closely with Product, Design, Backend, Infrastructure, iOS, and fellow mobile engineering leaders to deliver experiences that are intuitive, delightful, and reliable for millions of users worldwide. This role combines deep hands-on technical leadership with organization-wide influence, shaping how multiple teams build and scale mobile software as part of Slack's Architect technical leadership track.
What You'll Do
- Define the multi-year technical strategy behind experiences used by millions of Slack users every day, spanning multiple teams and the broader organization.
- Lead the most complex, ambiguous, cross-functional initiatives from early technical exploration through production rollout and long-term evolution, often spanning several teams or the entire org.
- Lead feature prototyping to define the Android user experience for Slack’s biggest opportunities.
- Partner with Product and Design leadership to shape experiences that balance user needs, technical constraints, and long-term maintainability at scale.
- Identify and drive org-wide opportunities to improve performance, reliability, accessibility, and developer productivity.
- Act as a top-level technical authority, influencing engineering decisions across the org through architecture reviews, technical strategy, and mentorship of staff and senior engineers.
- Set and evangelize best practices for Android development, testing, observability, and operational excellence across the broader engineering organization.
- Drive the evolution of Slack's mobile architecture and infrastructure to support future product investments, including AI-powered experiences.
- Mentor and grow other Staff and Senior engineers, and help cultivate technical leadership across the broader Android engineering community within Slack.
What We're Looking For
- Proven track record, at an Architect level, of leading large, ambiguous, org-spanning technical initiatives with significant measurable business impact.
- Deep experience designing systems and architectures that scale across many teams and long-lived codebases over many years.
- Demonstrated ability to influence technical direction purely through expertise and collaboration, driving alignment across executive and senior stakeholders and multiple teams.
- 15+ years of professional software engineering experience, including extensive experience building and scaling Android applications in production.
- Deep, recognized expertise in Kotlin and modern Android development, with a track record of setting technical standards that others across the industry or company follow.
- Expert understanding of Android architecture, application lifecycle, concurrency, networking, and performance optimization at scale.
- Strong product intuition and a passion for creating exceptional user experiences.
- Excellent communication skills and a track record of influencing across Engineering, Product, and Design leadership, including executive stakeholders.
- A bias toward ownership, execution, and continuous improvement, with the judgment to prioritize the highest-leverage work across the organization.
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience with Jetpack Compose and modern Android architecture patterns.
- Experience building shared platforms, design systems, or developer infrastructure used across multiple teams.
- Deep expertise in application performance, startup optimization, reliability, and observability at scale.
- Experience leading large-scale technical migrations or architectural transformations spanning multiple teams or the whole org.
- Contributions to open source projects or the Android community, or other external recognition of technical leadership.
- Experience building collaboration, productivity, messaging, AI, or enterprise software products.
Why Join Us?
You'll have the opportunity to shape the technical direction of Slack's mobile platform at an organizational scale, influence experiences used by millions of people, and work alongside some of the strongest mobile engineers in the industry. You'll help define how work gets done on mobile in an increasingly AI-powered world.
