OwnBackup is seeking a talented and experienced Director of Communications to lead our external communications strategy and execution. In this role, you will be responsible for enhancing and amplifying the OwnBackup brand and reputation, as well as leading strategic planning and storytelling to capture the hearts and minds of target audiences. The successful candidate is someone who is passionate and curious, can translate technical advancements into compelling stories, thinks boldly and creatively about how to tell stories, has experience leading and managing teams, and is a team player brimming with ideas. You will be responsible for working closely with executives and cross-functional teams to create annual, seasonal and project-based communications strategies, as well as build relationships with key consumer, business and financial press to secure stories that highlight OwnBackup's unique market positioning.

This role reports to the VP of Communications.

Your Day-to-Day Role

  • Create and execute global communications strategy to drive business objectives and Company reputation.
  • Develop an integrated, coordinated approach to communications across the business globally through external initiatives and campaigns to showcase the Company’s vision and business priorities.
  • Build and execute communications strategies and engagement appropriate to the communication style, tone and preferences of OwnBackup’s executives.
  • Build and lead C-level external communications activities, including unique messaging platforms, media interviews, speaking opportunities, social media content development and bylines.
  • Amplify employment branding and recruitment communications (culture, career development, values, benefits and more) in partnership with the Internal Communications and HR teams.
  • Provide members of the Executive Leadership Team with guidance and support for issues surrounding media, corporate and crisis communications.
  • Develop earned media relations strategy, securing high-level placements across digital, broadcast, print media and podcasts.
  • Establish best practice ways of working and communication processes across the organization.
  • Serve as an ambassador for OwnBackup’s culture by maintaining consistent transparency, voice and tone across all communications and channels.

Your Work Experience

  • 8+ years of communications experience, with at least 3 years in a leadership role.
  • Strong leader with experience managing teams and helping them succeed, as well as working in a growing and fast-paced environment.
  • Experience and demonstrated ability to work alongside executives as a trusted advisor.
  • Balance of strategic vision with tactical execution — you see the larger picture, but you can also dig into the details to get things done.
  • Proven track record working with top-tier business and financial reporters to secure stories that advance company priorities.
  • Ability to create and execute a comprehensive external and internal communications strategy that aligns with business objectives and values.
  • Strong understanding of crisis management and ability to develop proactive and reactive communication strategies and messaging.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to work under tight deadlines, manage multiple projects at a time, and deliver quality work under pressure.
  • Operating with a sense of urgency.
  • Experience working with and managing Agency Partners.
  • Bachelor's degree required, preferably in Journalism, Communications, or Writing/English; MA, MS in a related field, or MBA is a bonus.

Important Details

This is a full-time position. The ideal candidate will work out of our Englewood Cliffs, NJ office to maximize collaboration and interaction with the business. Travel may be required.
