40Seas is a data-driven accounts receivable management platform built for businesses engaged in global commerce. The company’s fully embedded, end-to-end solution not only disrupts legacy trade-financing models but also digitizes and streamlines invoice-to-cash workflows, payment terms, FX management, and enables online payments.

As a Director of Underwriting, you will lead the company’s underwriting management. This will require hands-on underwriting work of SMBs in multiple countries, in addition to helping design and define processes, methodologies, and partnerships. You will work closely with the company’s Chief Risk Officer, management, and other related team members.

This position requires agility and an open-minded personality, as well as a high level of technical and analytical expertise with the ability to define and build processes and methodologies.

Responsibilities:

  • Hands-on experience with the underwriting process for SMBs to determine creditworthiness, while defining long-term processes, methodologies, and automation.
  • Work with existing vendors and onboard new relevant ones.
  • Collaborate with the company’s product, development, and business teams to influence the company’s roadmap based on your ideas and expertise.
  • Coach, train, and manage junior underwriters as we expand the team.

Requirements:

  • 5 years of commercial underwriting experience. Experience at a Fintech company is a significant advantage.
  • Experience in underwriting small businesses. Experience with underwriting US and European companies is a significant advantage.
  • Proactive self-starter mentality that encourages collaboration and creative thinking in a dynamic environment.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills, driving for actionable insights and a data-driven culture.
  • Ability to work independently as well as in a team environment.
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills.
  • Proven leadership, training, and mentoring skills.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Relevant bachelor's or master's degree focused on finance or accounting, or a qualification such as CPA or CFA charter.
  • Experience in team management.
  • Knowledge and expertise in fraud risks and mitigation solutions.
  • Knowledge and experience in global trade financial tools and managing credit insurance policies.
  • Knowledge of additional European languages.
