About the Position:
We are seeking a synthetic biologist with expertise in applied microbiology, metabolic engineering, genetic circuit design, protein engineering, and directed evolution. Experience with high-dimensional data analytics, bioinformatics/omics, and/or lab automation is desired but not required. You will report to the Director of Synthetic Biology and work closely with our management team as a leader in a growing R&D organization. The successful applicant will work with an interdisciplinary team of scientists, lead research projects, and mentor junior staff in pursuit of novel small-molecule therapeutics,.
Responsibilities:
- Develop, scale, and automate multi-dimensional screens
- Design, test, and optimize genetic circuits and metabolic pathways
- Optimize biochemical workflows for rigor, reproducibility, and throughput
- Prepare presentations and present data to both our internal team and external partners
- Write Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) and maintain a high-quality Electronic Laboratory Notebook (ELN)
- Work closely with scientists, researchers, and various teams across the organization to address research questions, optimize workflows, and support strategic decision-making
Qualifications:
- PhD with at least 2 years of post-graduate experience or MS with 5 years of experience
- Hands on experience with the design, optimization, and use of synthetic transcriptional circuits, biosynthetic gene clusters (BGCs), and growth-coupled assays
- Experience scaling and industrializing novel microbial assays
- Adaptability and flexibility to work in a dynamic startup environment
- Strong collaboration skills (verbal and written communication, organization, teamwork, and creativity)
Preferred:
- Experience in data science, BGC discovery, and next-generation sequencing
- Experience with the characterization and isolation of fermentation products (GCMS, LCMS, HPLC, NMR, etc) and laboratory automation
- Experience starting and managing lab operations
- Experience with in vitro enzymatic assays
- Industrial experience in synthetic biology and/or preclinical R&D for small molecule candidate therapeutics and a familiarity with the drug discovery process (e.g., biology, pharmacology, toxicity, and industry trends)
