About the team
The Core Analytics & Science Team (CAS) is Uber's primary science organisation, covering both our main lines of business as well as the underlying platform technologies on which those businesses are built. We are a key part of Uber's cross-functional product development teams, helping to drive every stage of product development through data analytic, statistical, and algorithmic expertise. CAS owns the experience and algorithms powering Uber's global Mobility and Delivery products. We optimise and personalise the rider and driver experience, target incentives and introduce customizations for routing and matching for products and use cases that go beyond the core Uber capabilities.
Within CAS, the Mobility Science team focuses on improving the core rider and driver experience across Uber’s Mobility business. Our work spans areas such as marketplace health, pricing and incentives, matching and dispatch, rider experience, and driver experience, with the goal of ensuring a reliable and efficient experience for millions of riders and drivers globally.
A key part of this mission is enabling high-quality experimentation and causal measurement across product features that influence marketplace dynamics. The team develops and applies advanced experimentation methodologies and quasi-causal inference techniques to evaluate product changes, understand marketplace interventions, and guide data-driven decision making in complex, networked environments where traditional experimentation may not always be feasible.
About the Role
The Mobility and Delivery Science team is Uber's science organisation covering two of our core lines of business. We are a key part of Uber's cross-functional product development teams, helping to drive every stage of product development through data analytic, statistical, and algorithmic expertise. We own the experience and algorithms powering Uber's global Mobility and Delivery products. We optimise and personalise the rider experience, target incentives and introduce customizations for routing and matching for products and use cases that go beyond the core Uber capabilities.
What the Candidate Will Do
- Lead marketplace analytics, such as understanding rider and driver price sensitivity and the balance of supply and demand, to inform pricing, incentive and matching decisions.
- Develop and grow a team of data scientists
- Work with cross functional stakeholders and influence product roadmap for their respective area, including pricing and marketplace strategy
- Refine ambiguous questions and generate new hypotheses about the product through a deep understanding of the data, our customers, and our business
- Review the design of experiments and help interpret the results to draw detailed and impactful conclusions, across standard A/Bs as well as Switchback setup and quasi-experimental techniques like synthetic controls
- Define how our teams measure success, by developing Key Performance Indicators and other users/business metrics, in close partnership with Product and other subject areas such as engineering, operations and marketing
- Collaborate with data engineers to build and improve on the availability, integrity, accuracy, and reliability of data logging and data pipelines.
- Develop data-driven business insights and work with cross-functional partners to find opportunities and recommend prioritization of product, growth, and optimization initiatives.
Basic Qualifications
- Undergraduate and/or graduate degree in Math, Economics, Statistics, Engineering, Computer Science, or other quantitative fields.
- Educational background in Economics (preferred), or relevant experience in an equivalent domain (preferred), or a strong product science background in the tech industry.
- 9+ years experience in Data Science, Analytics or other types of data analysis-focused functions
- 2+ years experience in managing team of analytics and data science professionals with demonstrated ability to guide and mentor them
- Advanced Python expertise
- Excellent understanding of statistical principles backed by an academic foundation
- Experience with Excel and some dashboarding/data visualization (i.e. Tableau, Mixpanel, Looker, or similar)
- Strong leadership and team management skills.
- Excellent communication and stakeholder management abilities.
- Ability to mentor, coach and develop junior and senior team members
- Superb organization skills
Preferred Qualifications
- Proven track record to wrangle large datasets, extract insights from data, and summarize learnings/takeaways.
- Proven aptitude toward Data Storytelling and Root Cause Analysis using data
- Ability to learn and adapt to new methodologies for data collection and analysis
- Ability to deliver on tight timelines and prioritize multiple tasks while maintaining quality and detail
- Ability to work in a self-guided manner
